How do i explain what this quote means?

If you were to explain it to someone I would say it like this: Civilization is always expanding and becoming more advanced, for example computers, and i pods. These things are not necessities and aren't necessary for daily living, yet people desire them, and are influenced by society in such a way that they feel these things have become necessity. At least, that was my interpretation of the quote.
