Why are young women consistently generalized as being more mature than young men their age?

Twelve year olds. People sometimes foolishly think that because a 12 year old girl is probably more ually mature than a 12 year old boy, that it somehow translates into maturity at 20 years old. Once they are about 15 or so, the maturity levels out for most people.
